AREA Courses

In 2007 the Football Premiership and Football Association appointed a Steering Group to consider the various aspects of the Emergency Medical Care of Players. A number of different aspects have been considered. One recommendation is that all medical staff covering professional teams in the Premiership should have a standardised method of managing medical emergencies that may be encountered during football matches. The AREA (Advanced Resuscitation and Emergency Aid) Course is designed to meet these demands. The course is tailor made for football using the same principles of the REMO Course. The course is run over 2 days and is compulsory for all those medical staff in the Premiership covering first team and reserve teams. It is not however exclusive to the Premiership teams. Other non-Premiership teams are welcome to attend. All Premiership medical staff must have successfully completed the AREA Course by August 1st 2008. There is an examination on the course and if successful is valid for a period of 3 years.
A compulsory yearly refresher course (one day) is also to be completed. This day is not subject to an examination and involves only practical skill management.
There are different types of AREA Courses:
- This is a 2 Day Course
- The course is examined objectively and certified for three years.
- The aims of the course are to provide lectures, skills station training and event incident recreation to teach and develop the emergency skills of the onfield practitioner

- Accommodation is provided in the cost of the course.
- An evening meal is included on the middle night, dress is causal.
- Dress for the course is appropriate clothing for treating casualties e.g. tracksuits or similar.
- 1 Day yearly refresher course and certified for one year,
- This day is not subject to an examination and involves only practical skill management.
